Our hair is an important extension of our personality. Healthy and voluminous hair brings confidence and adds positivity to our overall personality. Since our hair is of utmost importance to us, we get so concerned if we experience hair loss. The research for finding methods of hair fall control for females is still limited. You need to be cautious because some products can cause more damage if they are not used correctly or may not suit everyone.

If you are experiencing hair loss, we have got you covered. Read this article to find out the reasons for hair loss in women and how it can be controlled.

What is Hair Loss in Women?

Hair loss in women is not only common now but also rapidly increasing. The symptoms include hair thinning, loss of hair volume, visibility of scalp in the crown area and excessive shedding of hair (200 to 400 strands a day).

The stats from a decade ago suggested that hair loss was more common in men than in women. While men experienced hair loss after the age of 35, women experienced hair loss after the age of 50. However, at present, hair loss has crossed the age barrier and can also be seen in teenagers.

There could be many reasons behind it. In the majority of cases, stress is found to be one of the biggest causes of sudden hair loss in women.

Types of Hair Loss in Women?

Losing a maximum of 100 strands in a day is normal. If you are losing more than that, it could be because of some underlying conditions. According to the intensity of hair loss and the reason behind it, there are different types of hair loss in women. These are:

  • Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is the loss of hair in patches on the scalp, commonly referred to as bald patches. In this type of hair loss, a patch on the scalp loses hair completely due to an autoimmune condition in human bodies that attacks the hair follicles and suspends the growth of hair in that area. In rare cases, bald patches can develop in any body part where hair grows.

  • Androgenetic Alopecia
Commonly known as pattern baldness, it is generally found in males but can also be seen in females at a later age. The symptoms include hair thinning in the crown area of the head. Androgenetic alopecia is generally heredity, which means a person can experience female or male pattern hair loss if they have a family history.

  • Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia results from continuous trauma caused to hair follicles due to tight hairstyling, like ponytails and hair buns. Pulling back of hair in tight bondage can cause hair follicles to loosen, resulting in hair loss. Continuation of such activities can cause permanent hair loss.

  • Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium often happens when the body or immune system is recovering from a stressful event. When we are recovering from a disease, infection or childbirth, the stress causes our hair in the anagen (growth) phase to enter the telogen (resting or shedding) phase. This causes hair loss in women. Depending upon the severity of the trauma your body went through, it can last from a few weeks to 6 months.

  • Anagen Effluvium
Anagen Effluvium is similar to Telogen Effluvium as in this type of hair loss, hair in the anagen (growth) phase starts shedding at an abnormal rate. This happens when our body is exposed to toxic chemicals; it can also be associated with chemotherapy. More than 90% of people going through chemotherapy lose their hair.

Common Cause of Hair Loss in Women

Common Cause of Hair Loss in Women

Knowing what may be causing your hair loss would help you find a suitable treatment for it. The following are some of the common causes of hair loss in women:

  1. Stress
Whether it’s a man or a woman, stress is the cause of hair loss in the majority of cases. Our lives have become so chaotic that it is very difficult not to get stressed. Apart from hair loss, it may also lead to other health issues. However, hair loss due to stress is temporary and curable.

  2. Insufficient Diet
Women tend to go on special diets to maintain their physique. They may even go for a vigorous exercise routine to lose weight. However, such diets and exercises should include sufficient nutrients and essential vitamins, which can otherwise result in hair loss.

  3. Ageing
Ageing is a common cause of hair loss in women. Just like all other cells in our body, the growth cells on the scalp or follicles also get weak. The rate of hair growth (anagen) gets much less than the rate of telogen (shedding), which results in permanent hair loss. Hair loss due to ageing is also accompanied by hair thinning and greying.

  4. Hair Styling
Many may not believe it, but hair styling is a common cause of hair loss amongst women at a young age. They use chemical products like hair spray, colour and gel, and heating products like hair dryers and heating rods to style their hair. Such products can cause damage to hair follicles, which eventually results in hair loss.

  5. Family History
Your hair texture and hair loss are genetically passed on by your parents. If hair loss issues, like baldness, have been there in your family history, this could also be another cause of your hair loss.

Symptoms of Hair Loss in Women

The following are some of the common symptoms of hair loss in women:

  • A decline in the volume of hair. This can be noticed when you make a ponytail or bun; you will be able to notice the difference gradually.
  • Hair thinning at the top or crown area or on the overall head.
  • Increased visibility of the scalp through the hair. This can be generally seen in the middle partition, crown area and on the front hairline.
  • If androgenetic alopecia is the cause of your hair loss, you may see bald patches on your head.
  • Increased hair fall, more than 100 strands a day, is another symptom of hair loss.

Tips to Control Hair Fall

Just by making a little change to their lifestyle, women can control hair fall. If you are at an early stage of hair loss, the following tips will help you control hair loss to a great extent.

  • Essential Oil Massage - Several essential oils, like tea tree & peppermint oil can be used to treat scalp concerns. Lavender, lemon grass, cedarwood and argan oil promote hair growth.

  • Healthy Diet - Make sure you have a healthy diet rich in proteins and vitamins that are essential for hair growth.

  • Restrict Heating - Heating can cause permanent damage to the scalp and hair follicles. Try to avoid the overuse of heating appliances.

  • Home Remedies - Using some home remedies like aloe vera, egg, amla or onion juice on the scalp can also help control hair fall for women.

  • Let your scalp breathe - It is important to let your scalp breathe for improved blood circulation. Do not keep your hair tied up all the time; let them loose every now and then.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
