Hair thinning is a common problem that affects us all. Causes of hair thinning are varied and they may range from genetic factors to poor diet and lack of care. If kept unchecked, then hair thinning might lead to permanent damage, leading to hair fall and balding.

If you are one of those unfortunate souls who might be wondering, “My hair is getting thin, what should I do?” then read on… In this blog we shall look at the various causes of hair thinning, the treatment available for the same and ways in which we can make our thin hair thicker.

What Are the Causes of Hair Thinning?

Family History

Hair thinning is often caused by genetic factors. People who have family members with thin hair are likely to have thin hair as well. This condition, which is called androgenic alopecia, can affect both men and women.

However, it typically becomes pronounced with aging. It usually occurs in a predictable pattern, making it easier to be recognized. In men, for example, it appears in an M-shaped pattern, while in women, the hair thinning is more diffused and happens over the crown.

Causes of Hair Thinning

Hormonal Changes

The body goes through hormonal changes constantly. In women, especially, hormonal changes after the age of 50 can lead to hair thinning and, eventually, hair fall.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions can trigger hair thinning as well. These include, among others, alopecia areata – an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks its own hair cells, causing them to fall off. Although alopecia occurs in patches, in some cases, like in alopecia totalis, hair loss might start with gradual thinning of hair followed by baldness.

Diet

Hair follicles need protein and vitamins to grow and become thicker. A poor nutritional diet can wreak havoc with hair causing it to gradually thin out and fall off.

Stress

Usually, hair regrowth is adversely affected when you are undergoing stressful situations. Hair usually returns to normalcy after the stress period is over. This type of hair loss due to stress is called telogen effluvium. Alopecia areata may be another side effect of excessive stress.

How Can I Get Thicker Hair Naturally?

Proper food

Proper food

Fix your diet for natural healthy-looking hair strands. Since the hair on our head is mainly made up of Keratin, a naturally occurring structural protein, it is important that you incorporate plenty of protein in your diet. There are plenty of super foods that can be incorporated in your diet to make your hair strands naturally healthy and full of life.

Exercise

Exercise

Another important way to get thicker hair is to exercise. Physical activity boosts growth hormones that can also help in hair growth and increase the volume of your hair.

Brushing

Brushing

Brush your hair well at least two times a day in order to promote blood circulation in the hair roots. Brushing helps in increasing the hair density and promoting the thickness of hair.

Hair Care

Hair Care

Just like the skin, hair too requires special care. A deep conditioning shampoo, hair spa and volumizing conditioners are helpful in promoting hair growth and stimulating hair follicles and restoring essential oils in the scalp. It is desirable that you pamper your scalp at least once a month for noticeable results.

Prevention Tips for Your Hair from Thinning

Here are some of the best prevention tips for thinning hair. These tips can easily be followed at home. Just spend a little more time with your hair and see the difference in the hair volume yourself.

  1. Regularly wash your hair with a mild shampoo along with a conditioner. It is important that you keep your scalp clean in order to promote hair growth. Dirt and grime stuck to hair follicles is perhaps the most common cause of hair thinning.
  2. You can enrich your diet with protein. Protein, especially Biotin, is considered a stimulant for hair regrowth. Protein can be found in nuts, fish oil, meat, etc.
  3. Vitamins found in fruits and vegetables promote hair growth and naturally increase the volume and shine of hair shafts. If you are unsure about the amount of vitamins you are taking, then opt for vitamin supplements that are easily available over the counter.
  4. Most often we find that people who suffer from hair fall and hair thinning drink less water than the recommended amount. You need to drink at least eight glasses of water every day to keep your skin and hair hydrated. Drinking enough water will ensure that your hair shafts, which are made up of one-quarter water, are hydrated throughout the day.
  5. Green tea is full of antioxidants that promote hair growth. Rub at least two bags of green tea on your hair shafts and wash your hair thoroughly afterwards. This will stimulate hair growth and prevent unwanted hair loss.

What Vitamin Are You Lacking if Your Hair Is Thinning?

While diet is the key to ensure hair growth and prevent hair fall, it is important to remember that the diet must be full of nutritional value in order to promote hair regrowth and off-set the long term impact of age, genetics and hormones on hair health.

What Vitamin Are You Lacking if Your Hair Is Thinning?

Following are the vitamins you are lacking if you find your hair to be thinning:

  • Vitamin A: This vitamin helps hair to produce a serum that naturally moisturizes the hair shafts and helps in hair growth.
  • Vitamin B: This is perhaps the most important type of vitamin that is needed for hair regeneration and growth. Apart from biotin, there are other B vitamins that are needed for hair growth as well. These vitamins carry the much-needed oxygen to hair follicles, promoting hair growth.
  • Vitamin C: Free radicals are bad for both skin and hair. Therefore, it is important to incorporate Vitamin C, which is full of antioxidants that reduce the impact of free radicals in the body. Vitamin C helps to improve hair texture and volume and also adds a natural sheen to hair shafts.
  • Vitamin D: Low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to alopecia areata and other types of hair loss, including female pattern baldness and male pattern baldness. Vitamin D can be found in oily fish, red meat, liver, egg yolks and fortified foods such as breakfast cereal.
  • Vitamin E: Very similar to Vitamin C, this vitamin reduces the oxidative stress on hair and helps in improving the natural shine of hair.

Is Thinning Hair Permanent?

Thinning hair can become permanent if not taken care of. It is important to realize that all human beings lose hair strands. On an average, it is common for a human being to lose about 60 to 100 hair strands a day.

However, if you continue to lose hair at an alarming rate, then you may have a problem. Therefore, our advice would be to keep a close watch on hair strands that you lose every day. Any noticeable amount of hair loss should immediately be reported to a hair specialist. If checked early, thinning hair need not be permanent.

How Can I Make My Thin Hair Thicker?

Here are some of the daily rituals that you should follow if you are already suffering from thinning hair:

  • Keep your hair strands and scalp clean by using a gentle shampoo.
  • Follow it up with a nourishing or a volumizing conditioner that has the essential nutrients to promote hair growth.
  • Brush your hair strands regularly to encourage blood circulation of hair follicles.
  • Apart from regular hair care, it is important that you go for special hair care routines such as hair spa and deep conditioning, which can also double up as treatments for hair thinning.

Can Stress Cause Thinning Hair?

Stress is considered as the most common cause of hair loss. In fact, studies have shown that even certain medical conditions, such as alopecia areata and telogen effluvium can be caused by excessive stress.

The same can also increase the propensity for female pattern hair loss and male pattern baldness. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends reducing stress as an effective mechanism to improve hair health and reduce chances of all types of hair loss.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
