Hair loss is a problem that many are familiar with. The common causes of hair loss include genetics, medical treatment, telogen effluvium and bad lifestyle, however, irrespective of the reason, losing hair is challenging.

Many people associate hair with their overall personality. Its lack, thereof, can make them conscious. Fortunately, modern science offers us a number of hair loss solutions. The most touted amongst them is hair transplant.

A hair transplant is a medical procedure that helps in regaining lost hair. It is a technique that moves individual hair follicles from one area of the head, which is called the donor site – normally the sides or the back of the head – to the balding area of the head, which is called the recipient site.

Are you the right candidate for it? What are the benefits of hair transplant surgery? Should you consider it? We answer all these questions and more in this blog.

What Is a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant can be described as a procedure in which hair from one part of your scalp is moved to the one that is experiencing hair fall, but there is more to this surgery. Before you decide to book an appointment you should know about the entire procedure:

  1. The clinical experts will first look for healthy hair on your scalp. These are usually found at the side or at the back of your head. Once healthy hair is located, these are removed either by removing individual hair or by cutting a strip of the skin with good hair. The first option is a time-consuming process but it does not leave any long-lasting or permanent scar on your scalp.
  2. Next, your good hair will be prepped for the transplant by the technicians and the doctor will make your scalp ready for the procedure.
  3. Hair transplant is not a one-man job. A team of experts will insert healthy hair, along with its roots, into the balding area of your scalp. Once the entire procedure is finished, your doctor will give you details on post-surgery care.
  4. After post-surgery care, the transplanted hair will act as natural hair. They will grow like the rest of your hair.

These were the standard steps that were followed during yester-years hair transplants done in the past. In case you want to know about them you may read about the different techniques that were used for hair transplant then, below:

  1. Strip harvesting: A small strip of tissues is cut from the donor site and patched onto the receiving site. This strip covers the bald spot and new hair grows on it.
  2. Flap Surgery: This technique is used to cover larger bald patches. Approximately 350 grafts can support one flap. In this surgery, the doctor removes a part of the bald scalp and replaces it with a flap that has hair on it. This flap is taken from the donor site. This flap’s other end remains attached to the original blood supply. This flap with hair on it is sewn in place of the bald patch.
  3. Scalp Reduction: This process is also called advanced flap surgery. In this procedure, the flap is pulled forward (advanced) towards the bald area.
  4. Single Hair and Slit Grafting: This procedure is suggested to patients who want to have a fuller frontal hairline. Single tissues with hair follicles are inserted in the slits made using a needle or a scalpel on the balding front hairline.
  5. Dilation: The doctor inserts dilators directly into a patient’s scalp to push the scalp aside and promote the insertion of mini-grafts or micro-needles. In some cases, holes are also punched into the thin part of the scalp where the insertion of grafts is required. The site for the insertion of grafts can also be prepared using lasers.
  6. Follicular Unit Extraction: In Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE, the surgeon will make small holes in the balding area. They will extract a single healthy hair follicle from the donor site and insert it into that hole. This is a time-consuming process but it does not leave any noticeable scar and has great results.

The current generation has the better options available to perform a hair transplant procedure. A number of upgrades have happened, both in technique as well as skill sets thanks to a lot of focus on the hair loss issue as it is faced by more and more men and women across the world.

Benefits of Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is one of the most common treatments for hair loss. The procedure might sound daunting but the benefits are worth it:

A Viable Solution

There are certain medical conditions in which topical ointments and medicines may not work. Androgenetic alopecia is one of them. Here, investing in any other form of treatment would be a waste of money. Hair transplant is a long term solution for such conditions.

Boost in Confidence

It is no doubt that hair adds to the personality. Many people see a tremendous boost in confidence with hair growth. Hair transplant gives you a natural looking head of hair that adds to your everyday conviction.

No More Balding

Female and male pattern hair loss and baldness is hard to treat with any kind of remedy other than a hair transplant. Other treatments can only provide temporary solutions in such cases but a Hair transplant will give you a long-lasting solution.

High Success Rate

Unlike other hair restoration options, hair transplant has a higher success rate. It is a sure solution for a good number of people. The chances of losing transplanted hair are almost negligible.

Low Maintenance

Once you are done with your post-procedure care, you don’t need to apply any cream or buy special shampoos and conditioners. Your transplants will behave like your natural hair. You need to maintain them the way you would maintain your regular hair.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Hair Transplant?

Any man or woman of any age can be a good candidate for a hair transplant. Irrespective of your family history or any other cause of hair loss, you can consider a hair transplant to restore your hair.

While you will get the final answer after medical advice and diagnosis, here are a few things that will determine if you are a good candidate for hair transplant:

  1. Do you have enough healthy hair on your scalp that can be extracted and transplanted to the bald area?
  2. Is the scalp area where you want to transplant hair, healthy enough to support hair growth?

You can check the first one on your own but the second one will be confirmed by the hair experts on personal physical check. A thorough scalp examination will need to be conducted.

Along with this test, the clinical experts will look at other aspects of your health and the underlying cause of your hair loss. You might be asked to get a blood test done to pin-point the cause of hair fall. This test will show if there is any deficiency in your blood that has caused baldness.

At times, a scalp biopsy is also required for further testing. At the end of the tests, your doctor will go through the results and let you know the scope of the hair transplant.

Since the transplanted hair grows like natural hair, it is important to see the strength of the scalp when it comes to supporting them. At times, getting a full head of hair is not an option but you can hope for a fuller-looking head of hair.

Is Hair Transplant Safe and Permanent?

Yes, a hair transplant is a safe procedure. And it is a permanent solution for hair loss problems for most of the candidates. Hair follicles are taken from your scalp and grafted into the affected area. The purpose of the transplant is to promote the growth of natural-looking hair which wasn’t otherwise possible.

A hair transplant is a simple procedure that is reasonably painless. It doesn’t take much time to complete the whole procedure and you can be done with the surgery in a few hours.

It’s not the procedure itself that is lengthy, but rather making sure a natural looking hairline is created by using the right hair texture and placement so it matches your facial features and your growing hair – this aspect takes a few months.

Results Depend Largely on the Surgeon You Select

  1. Even though hair transplant procedures are known to give patients natural-looking results, still the result depends largely on the surgeon you select. If you want hundred percent results, then you should choose a doctor who understands hair loss and performs hair transplants regularly.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
