Top-Rated Methods to Prevent Your Hair Extensions

You get up one morning and see your hair extensions matted on your head like a rat’s nest, how would you feel? Won’t it be your worst nightmare coming true? Unfortunately, this can happen but the good part is that it is completely preventable.

But before discussing how to do that, let us understand what matting means.

Hair Extensions Matting

Hair Extensions Matting

Matting is basically entangling of hair extensions with your real hair to form clusters around the scalp. Once getting tangled, the clusters grow larger and larger.

At the beginning stage, the hair can be easily untangled and corrected, but the more you leave them, the more matted they will become. It would be very difficult for them or remove them.

Reasons for Matting

Reasons for Matting

The main reason for hair extension matting is carelessness in the daily after-care routine of the extensions. Some of these practices can be:

  • Failure to separate bonds at roots: While wearing extensions, you need to run your fingers across your scalp on daily basis to ensure none of your bonds have entangled with each other throughout the night or day. Failing to do this can lead to matting.
  • Sleeping with wet hair extensions: It is absolutely vital that hair extensions are completely dry and secured in plaits while sleeping. Slightly damp while sleeping can lead to tangled hair extensions.
  • Poor hair extension application: If you have to get it done by a qualified professional, then you are unlikely to face this problem. But in case they are not fitted properly, they are probably going to end up getting tangled. So before you go for getting them done, always check the reviews of work done by the professional who is going to work on you.

How to prevent it from happening?

You need to be very careful with the after-care routine and should follow the instructions given by your professional. Some of the things to keep in mind to protect your extensions are:

  • Choosing the right brush: Using hair extension brush is essential as the ordinary brushes will pull on the bonds and make matt even worse. It may be hard to brush them, but it is very important to do that 2 or 3 times every day.
  • Never sleep with wet or damp hair: It’s better to leave your hair greasy for a day or two than to wash them on a day when you don’t have time to dry them before you go to sleep. Sleeping with wet hair is a big No-No for your extensions.
  • Always keep your hair clean: This can be achieved even without washing your hair. Just use a dry shampoo and brush them to keep unwanted dirt and oil from making the matting more complicated.
  • Get them on only by a professional: It is important to get extensions only from professionals to get them on correctly and don’t end up in matting.
  • Never use conditioner at the roots: Applying conditioner at roots can loosen the bonds and make the extensions fall out.

Preventing hair extensions matting is very easy. All you need to do is follow the routine and don’t be lazy!
