Baldness is becoming very common worldwide, especially in young individuals, and that’s why hair transplant is becoming a very popular hair loss solution. There are two common hair transplant techniques used to remove hair from a patient’s scalp — Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both methods involve transplanting the removed follicles back into the scalp, but they differ in how the follicles are extracted.
The initial Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplantation methods began several decades ago. Since then, the global hair transplant market has grown significantly, now reaching an annual market size of approximately $1.2 billion and continuing to rise.
What happens in a FUE hair transplant?
During a FUE procedure, the entire scalp is usually trimmed in advance. The follicular yield from the donor area is lower compared to other methods, as the FUE technique allows the surgeon to extract every second hair follicle from the donor zone. Each follicle is removed individually using a specialized, miniaturized punch tool. While both FUE and FUT may leave some scarring, FUE results in multiple small circular marks across a wider area, whereas FUT results in a single linear scar. These marks typically fade over time, especially when the surgery is performed by a skilled professional.
How the Follicular Unit Extraction method works:
- The scalp is anesthetized.
- A microneedle (less than 1 mm in diameter) is used to make a circular incision around a follicular unit to isolate it.
- The isolated unit is extracted using a tweezer-like tool.
- Tiny holes are drilled in the balding areas of the scalp.
- The extracted follicular units are inserted into these holes, where they begin to grow hair over time.
- A disinfectant is gently applied to the scalp after the procedure.
Some recent advancements
Significant advancements have been made in hair restoration techniques, particularly in FUE procedures. One of the major benefits of FUE is that it does not require a linear cut or sutures, unlike the older FUT method, which involved removing a large strip of scalp.
Another exciting advancement is the use of body hair for transplantation to the scalp. This method allows follicles to be harvested from areas like the chest, beard, and abdomen. Among these, beard hair is considered the most viable donor option due to its thickness, which can help achieve a fuller, more natural look.
