Everyday we lose 80-100 strands of hair normally but this doesn’t affect the volume of our hair because it has its own life-cycle. As on the one hand, they fall but on the other hand, the new ones replace them and this goes on in a cyclic way as a continuous process.
3 STAGES OF HAIR GROWTH CYCLE:
Each hair undergoes three distinct stages of growth before it falls off. To deal effectively with hair problems, how to grow hair faster or regrow hair, it's imperative to understand the growth cycle completely.
1st PHASE - ANAGEN:
The Anagen phase is synonymous with the growth phase of a hair primarily responsible for the formation of healthy hair
The follicles or hair roots are very active in this phase & ensure fast division of hair cells
Hair grows approximately ½ an inch every month
It grows a little faster in summers than in winters
This phase is usually of 3-5 years but extends up to 7 years amongst Asians
A full length hair averages 21-29 inches during its life cycle
Around 85-90% hair on one’s head remain in this stage at any given time
The longer a hair stays in this stage, the longer it will grow
2nd PHASE - CATAGEN:
At the end of Anagen phase a hair enters the Catagen phase
This is known as the transitional phase
In this phase the follicles renews itself
This period lasts about 2 weeks
The hair roots shrink to almost 1/3rd of its original size
The hair gets detached from the follicle and travels upward to the scalp
3rd PHASE - TELOGEN:
Also known as the Resting or Shedding phase
The follicle remains dormant during this phase
At any given time 10-15 percent of our hair remains in this phase
This resting phase lasts for about 3-4 months
At the end of this phase the hair falls off, sometimes on its own, sometimes pushed by newly grown hair
After this the cycle of a hair starts afresh, thus making it a continuous process
CORRELATION BETWEEN GROWTH PHASES & HAIR FALL:
Once the problem of hair fall plagues you, you have to understand the entire cycle of hair growth. In order to comprehend how to regrow hair, you need to find out the root cause of hair fall.
When the natural balance, that exists between growing Anagen hair & shedding Telogen hair, is for some reason disrupted.
If large numbers of hair enter the Telogen phase prematurely, the massive shift between the ratio of growth & fall, leads to thinning/balding.
The reasons for disrupted growth cycle can be manifold & varies from person to person. Few primary reasons are:
